Protocol move must be seen to be believed

There has been feverish speculation about the discredited Boris bringing in a law to override the Northern Ireland Protocol.

I resigned from the Conservative Party over the detested Protocol because it has the effect of edging Northern Ireland out of the Union.

It is dangerous. It is damaging. It is abhorrent.

One way or the other, it has to go.

Now, I’m not saying the Prime Minister cannot be believed. But looking at Johnson’s track record, I think I’m right to be suspicious and cynical.

I’ll wait and see what, if anything, is brought forward by Boris & co. next month before passing judgement.

If it’s merely a move to trigger Article 16, it’ll be next to useless. If, on the other hand, he introduces legislation that allows UK Ministers to override the Protocol, I will be the first to applaud the action.

In short, any proposed law must be seen to be believed. We’re all fed up with smoke and mirrors. It’s time for decisive action.
